Cloudways vs. Siteground – Which hosting to Choose & Why?

When it comes to web hosting, the choice you make can significantly impact your website’s performance, SEO, and user experience.

When I first started exploring hosting platforms for my projects, Cloudways and SiteGround quickly emerged as strong contenders.

Over the years, I’ve used both platforms extensively for different types of websites, from personal blogs to high-traffic e-commerce sites.

Two of the most popular hosting options are Cloudways and SiteGround.

Both have their unique features and benefits, but which one should you choose?

In this article, I’ll share my experiences with Cloudways and SiteGround, comparing them across various categories to help you make an informed decision based on real-world usage.

Key Takeaways:

  • Performance: Cloudways has faster server speeds and advanced caching, outperforming SiteGround.
  • Scalability: Cloudways offers more scalable options with its cloud infrastructure, ideal for growing businesses.
  • Pricing: Cloudways is more cost-effective with a pay-as-you-go model starting at $11/month, compared to SiteGround’s $17.99/month.

Cloudways: Quick Overview

Cloudways is a managed cloud hosting platform that offers flexibility, performance, and simplicity. It allows you to choose from top cloud providers like DigitalOcean, AWS, Google Cloud, and more. Cloudways handles server management, so you can focus on your website.

SiteGround: Quick Overview

SiteGround is a well-known web hosting provider that offers shared hosting, cloud hosting, and dedicated servers. It’s recognized for its excellent customer support, robust performance, and user-friendly features. SiteGround is a great choice for beginners and experienced users alike.

Key Comparison Metrics

1. Server Type

Cloudways: It offers cloud servers from various providers, giving you the flexibility to choose the best infrastructure for your needs.

You can select from DigitalOcean, AWS, Google Cloud, Vultr, and Linode. This variety ensures that you get high-performance servers tailored to your requirements.

SiteGround: On the other hand, SiteGround primarily offers shared hosting, cloud hosting, and dedicated servers. Their infrastructure is designed to provide robust performance and reliability, especially for small to medium-sized websites.

My Vote: Cloudways

2. Server Speed

Server speed is crucial for providing a fast and seamless user experience.

Cloudways: They excels in this area by leveraging advanced caching mechanisms, SSD-based servers, and optimized stack configurations (like Nginx, Varnish, and Redis). This ensures lightning-fast page load times, which can significantly improve user satisfaction and SEO rankings.

SiteGround: It also offers impressive server speeds with its use of SSD storage, custom server configurations, and the SuperCacher technology. They provide a consistent and fast hosting environment that ensures quick page loads, contributing to a better overall performance of your website.

I installed the default WordPress application on both servers to test the application score on Google Page Insights.

Here are the results I got!

Though the application speed score on both servers for Desktop was very close, there was some significant difference for Mobile.

Even if I consider this was a one-off, the Cloudways application score was extremely marginally better than the one on Siteground.

My Vote: Cloudways

3. Uptime Rate

Uptime is crucial for any website, as downtime can lead to lost visitors and revenue.

Cloudways: It boasts an impressive uptime rate due to the reliability of the cloud providers they partner with. This ensures that your website remains accessible around the clock.

SiteGround: They also offers excellent uptime rates, backed by their strong infrastructure and proactive monitoring.

Both guarantee a 99.9% uptime, crucial for maintaining your website’s availability, and my experience with both has been great. Rarely have the websites gone down due to server issues.

My Vote: It’s a Tie!

4. Pricing

Cloudways: It operates on a pay-as-you-go model, which means you only pay for the resources you use. This can be cost-effective for growing websites, as you can scale your resources based on demand.

Pricing starts as low as $11 per month for Cloud Server Hosting, making it a flexible option for various budgets.

My Recommendation: USD $14 per month (Digital Ocean – Premium)

Cloudways Server Pricing List

SiteGround: They offer straightforward pricing plans with different tiers based on your needs.

Their shared hosting plans start at $17.99 per month for a Shared Server Hosting, which is still affordable for small websites.

However, costs can increase if you require more advanced features or resources.

My Vote: Cloudways (cheaper for better server type)

5. Scalability

Cloudways: Scalability is where Cloudways truly shines. Since it leverages cloud infrastructure, you can easily scale your resources up or down based on your website’s traffic and needs. This flexibility is ideal for growing businesses or websites with fluctuating traffic patterns.

SiteGround: They also offers scalability, particularly with their cloud hosting plans. However, scaling can be more limited compared to the vast options available with Cloudways. For small to medium-sized websites, SiteGround’s scalability options are typically sufficient.

My Vote: Cloudways, by far!

6. Ease of Use

Cloudways: They provide a user-friendly platform with a custom dashboard that simplifies server management. Even if you’re not a tech expert, you can easily navigate the interface and manage your hosting environment. The platform handles updates, security, and backups, allowing you to focus on your website.

SiteGround: These guys are known for their intuitive control panel and user-friendly features. They offer cPanel, which is familiar to many users, and their Site Tools interface is designed to be simple and efficient. SiteGround also provides a wealth of tutorials and support resources to help you get started.

In my experience, the learning curve with Cloudways was a bit steeper initially, especially when setting up the server and configuring performance settings.

However, once I got the hang of it, the flexibility it offered was unmatched.

For example, when I needed to fine-tune my server settings for an e-commerce site to handle a surge in traffic, Cloudways allowed me to do so with ease.

On the other hand, SiteGround’s interface felt more intuitive right from the start, making it an ideal choice when I needed to set up a client’s WordPress site quickly.

The step-by-step guided setup and readily available customer support made the process smooth and stress-free.

My Vote: SiteGround

7. Customer Support

Customer support is a critical factor in choosing a hosting provider.

Cloudways: It offers 24/7 support through live chat and a ticketing system. Their support team is knowledgeable and responsive, helping you resolve any issues quickly.

SiteGround: They are also renowned for their exceptional customer support. They offer 24/7 support via phone, live chat, and tickets. Their support staff is highly trained and known for their quick response times, making it a reliable choice if you need assistance.

I personally like the customer support of Cloudways. Everytime I have initiated the chat with their team, I have been responded to in less than 3 minutes and have always got a solution.

SiteGround response time has been good, too, but initiating the chat option with their team is a little more complex than Cloudways.

My Vote: Cloudways

Final Verdict

As you have seen, my vote for all the points above; for most of the factors, my vote is for Cloudways.
The main decision factor where I would go for SiteGround is where my client wants to handle their hosting themselves. If they want me to handle it, then I recommend Cloudways to them.
That being said, both Cloudways and SiteGround offer excellent hosting solutions, so consider your website’s requirements and budget to make the best decision. Trust me, whichever you choose, you’ll be investing in a reliable and performance-oriented hosting provider.
